The Interislander ferry is the longest running Cook Strait ferry service in New Zealand. Interislander sails between Wellington (North Island) and Picton (South Island).

We made it ezi for you: your rental vehicle can go on the ferry! No need to leave the vehicle, carry your luggage on the ferry and no need to queue and wait for picking up another vehicle when off-boarding the ferry.

Frequently asked questions about the ferry

  • Vehicle Check-in

    Please arrive no later than 1 hour prior to departure time.

    To minimise delays, please have your booking details ready to present to check-in staff.

    Vehicle check-in procedure

    • Arrive at least 1 hour before departure
    • Follow signs for vehicle check-in
    • Have your ticket ready for check-in booth attendant
    • Stop at check-in booth and exchange ticket for boarding passes
    • Follow marshal’s instructions to boarding lane and park
    • Wait for marshal’s instruction to board
    • Do not use cell phones during boarding
    • Once on board, follow onboard marshal’s directions to park
    • Turn off headlights once you have entered the ship, as they may dazzle the marshal’s eyes
    • Once parked, ensure your handbrake is fully engaged and your car is in gear (or in park for automatic vehicles)
    • Turn off LPG tanks on campervans
    • Turn off alarm and anti-tow alarm (if present)
    • Lock your vehicle, ensuring all items are secure from damage or theft
  • Where is the Wellington vehicle terminal?

    When you are travelling with a vehicle, you can go directly to the vehicle check-in and do not need to visit the Passenger terminal.

    The Interislander Wellington Terminal is accessed from the Hutt Road (from the north) and Aotea Quay (from the south). When coming from the north, you need to exit from SH1/SH2 just before the two highways meet.

  • Important information for Wellington
    • Once you have checked in, you must remain with the vehicle.
    • If you wish to use the passenger terminal facilities before going to the vehicle check-in, then you will find free short-term parking outside the Departures building.
    • If any member of your party wishes to board as foot passenger, then you must all check-in at the Passenger terminal. The driver can then drive back to the vehicle check-in.
  • Where is the Picton vehicle terminal?

    When you are travelling with a vehicle from Picton, you can go directly to the vehicle check-in and don’t need to visit the passenger terminal.

    Picton Ferry Terminal is located very close to the Picton town centre and within easy walking distance.

    Built around a very sheltered harbour, Picton town has an attractive seafront dotted with cafés, restaurants and various types of galleries.

  • Important information for Picton
    • Once you have checked in, you must remain with the vehicle.
    • There is parking available nearby if you arrive early and wish to visit the Picton foreshore or town.
    • If some of your party want to board as foot passenger, then you must all check-in at the passenger terminal (there is free parking at the terminal for up to 30 minutes). The driver should then drive back to the vehicle terminal to check in.
  • Can I change my sailing?

    Tickets are fully refundable and changeable up to 24 hours before the crossing.
